Meta is developing an artificial intelligence avatar of CEO Mark Zuckerberg trained on his voice, image, mannerisms, and public statements, according to the Financial Times.

Meta is developing an artificial intelligence avatar of CEO Mark Zuckerberg trained on his voice, image, mannerisms, and public statements, according to the Financial Times. The AI version is designed to interact with Meta employees and provide feedback, with the company potentially expanding the technology to creators if the experiment succeeds.

Zuckerberg is directly involved in training the AI avatar and has begun dedicating 5 to 10 hours per week to coding on Meta's AI projects and participating in technical reviews, the Financial Times reported on April 13. The AI avatar is trained to replicate Zuckerberg's tone, mannerisms, and communication style so that employees might feel more connected to the founder through interactions with it.

Meta has already explored creator AI avatars in previous years. In 2024, the company demonstrated a live demo of what an AI persona of a creator might look like. The company also began allowing creators to make AI versions of themselves to respond to followers' comments on Instagram.

If the Zuckerberg avatar experiment proves successful, Meta plans to allow other creators to build their own AI avatars. Users on Meta's platforms can already create custom AI-generated chatbots, though the company restricted access for teens earlier in 2026.

The Zuckerberg avatar project is separate from another AI initiative reported by the Wall Street Journal in March, in which Zuckerberg is creating an AI agent of himself to help complete tasks and manage his schedule.

Context

Meta's move reflects a broader trend in the technology industry toward AI-powered digital representations of real people. The company has invested heavily in AI development as competition intensifies among major tech firms. In recent years, Meta has faced pressure to demonstrate AI capabilities comparable to competitors like OpenAI and Google, which have released advanced language models and AI agents.

The use of AI avatars for business purposes has precedent in other sectors. Some companies have experimented with AI versions of executives for internal communications and training, though widespread adoption remains limited. Meta's scale as a platform with billions of users gives it unique capacity to test and deploy such technology at enterprise level.

What's Next

Zuckerberg's increased involvement in Meta's AI projects signals the company's commitment to competing in the AI race. His personal time allocation to coding and technical reviews suggests Meta views AI development as a strategic priority for the company's future direction.
