Hello Sunshine's Slate Expands With Two July Releases and War Drama in Production

Deadline

Hello Sunshine, Reese Witherspoon's production company, is moving forward with multiple projects as the second season of "The Last Thing He Told Me" concludes on April 11.

Hello Sunshine, Reese Witherspoon's production company, is moving forward with multiple projects as the second season of "The Last Thing He Told Me" concludes on April 11. The company's upcoming releases include the TV adaptations "Elle" (July 1 on Prime Video) and "Lucky" (July 10 on Apple TV), while production on the World War II film "The Nightingale" began this week in Budapest.

Lauren Neustadter, President of Film and Television at Hello Sunshine, outlined the company's expanding slate in an April 10 interview. "Elle" and "Lucky" represent the company's continued focus on adapting books, particularly selections from Reese Witherspoon's Book Club. "Lucky," based on Marissa Stapley's novel, will premiere on Apple TV on July 10, with Stapley already working on a sequel novel titled "Not So Lucky."

"The Nightingale," a TriStar feature adaptation of Kristin Hannah's bestselling World War II novel, entered production this week after years of delays. The project was originally set for a Christmas 2020 theatrical release but stalled due to COVID-19 and the 2023 dual Hollywood labor strikes. Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning remain attached to the film since its initial deal in 2019, with new creative team members now involved in the production.

Neustadter emphasized the collaborative process between the television adaptation of "The Last Thing He Told Me" and author Laura Dave's companion novel "The First Time I Saw Him," which became Witherspoon's Book Club's first sequel selection in January 2026. Oscar-winning screenwriter Josh Singer, who is married to Dave, helped break the second season while Dave was writing her novel. Neustadter stated that the second season "put our foot on the gas" with multiple plot twists, and both star Jennifer Garner and co-star Judy Greer have expressed interest in a potential third season.

Context

Hello Sunshine has built a business model around adapting books, particularly from Witherspoon's Book Club. "Big Little Lies" Season 3 is accompanying Lianne Moriarty's sequel novel "Big Little Truths," establishing a pattern where television adaptations and companion novels release in tandem. This approach differs from traditional book-to-screen adaptation timelines, where productions typically conclude before publication of related works.

"The Last Thing He Told Me" premiered on Apple TV in April 2024 and received its Season 2 renewal nearly a year later. The show's success demonstrated demand for serialized adaptations of contemporary fiction, particularly mysteries and family dramas. The synchronization between Dave's novel writing and the show's production represents a relatively uncommon arrangement in the industry, requiring coordination between a screenwriter, novelist, and production team.

CONTEXT: The delays affecting "The Nightingale" reflect broader industry challenges. The project's original 2020 release date was derailed by pandemic shutdowns, and the 2023 Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes halted development across the industry for several months. The film's restart in Budapest signals a return to pre-strike production momentum for Hello Sunshine's theatrical slate.

What's Next

The July releases of "Elle" and "Lucky" will test audience appetite for back-to-back book adaptations from the same production company within two weeks. If both perform well on their respective streaming platforms, Hello Sunshine may accelerate development on additional Book Club selections currently in development.

The question of whether a third season of "The Last Thing He Told Me" will materialize depends on viewership of the Season 2 finale and whether Laura Dave commits to writing a third novel in the series. Neustadter's openness to continuing the story, combined with Garner and Greer's expressed interest, suggests the infrastructure for renewal exists if Apple TV greenlights additional episodes.
